FLOATING ISLANDS
January 10th - February 24th, 2015

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday, January 29th, 5 - 7:30 pm

Floating Islands is an exhibition of environmentally conscious art consisting of mixed media paintings, floating and striated sculptures, prints and single channel animations. The title refers to the islands of floating plastic waste collecting in the Pacific Ocean that force us to confront our cultural norms. Each artist in the show similarly confronts the viewer with a representation of our relationship to the environment; our attempts at understanding, our collaborations, representations and visions of the future. The clarity of these expressions lends notes of hope. After all, how far can a culture progress without understanding its position?

A group exhibition exploring representations of the environment
and natural processes in contemporary art.

MULTIPLE ONENESS - TIME RELEASED PERFORMANCE
MATT SULLIVAN, OBOE and KEN CRO-KEN, VISUAL ARTIST
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: ANDREW WAGGONER, VIOLIN & CAROLINE STINSON, CELLO

Thursday was a musical interlude, (www.weekendofchambermusic.com), with Weekend of Chamber Music (WCM) trio Andrew Waggoner, (violin) Matt Sullivan, (oboe/English horn) Caroline Stinson (cello) plus “visual artist” Ken Cro-Ken. Self-described “ecosystem painter,” Cro-Ken “sets a painting in motion to recreate the push-pull forces that shape all things,” and he did just that, accompanied by the trio’s evening of “Transprovisations.” The place was packed, the audience wildly enthusiastic.  - THE RIVER REPORTER, NEW YORK

NEW YORK TIMES review of MULTIPLE ONENESS performance at Symphony Space:

* THE NEW YORK TIMES - Music Review

By VIVIEN SCHWEITZER

(Published: February 22, 2011)

"The most unusual work I encountered was “Multiple Oneness,” an intriguing performance-art piece

by the oboist Matt Sullivan and the painter Ken Cro-Ken.  While Mr. Sullivan played a melancholy lament

over recorded sounds, Mr. Cro-Ken poured liquids onto a canvas projected onto a video screen.

The colorful liquids flowed through the painting’s raised surfaces like yellow lava,

swirling in strange tandem with the oboe’s melancholy tunes."

"Cro-Ken, readied with the projected live image of a preset textured and framed tabletop terrain on the wall and paint colors
in hand, commenced to pour the colors onto his canvas. The audience watched the paint flow, eddy round the contours,
blend together and repeat. In much the same way, the live and recorded oboe sequences looped,
layered and blended together in intriguing ways."

Echosystem: Protecting Our Water

with Special Guest, Ken Cro-Ken

@ Cooper Union's Great Hall 3/19/11

New music collective Ensemble Pi is pleased to return to Cooper Union's Great Hall,

for its 6th Annual Peace Project concert, Echosystem.

Highlights include Christopher Kaufman's Hudson Valley (2010), capturing the world of the Hudson River Valley

through music and beautiful film footage from Ken Cro-Ken, along with the dangers of natural gas drilling.

Including a video with the artwork of environmental painter Ken Cro-Ken and fellow painter, Alice Cotton.

Hudson Valley, by Chris Kaufman, originally commissioned by Quintet of the Americas, will be performed in an arrangement for flute, violin, horn, clarinet, cello and piano. The work combines live performance, sound design, speech, and a film composed from both natural images and the art of Ken Cro-Ken and Alice Cotton. The composer gathered hundreds of natural sounds from the Hudson River Valley environment (ocean, whale, dolphin, wolf, coyote) to create backgrounds and musical textures against and with which these sounds are performed. The penultimate movement, which depicts the dangers of natural gas drilling, features metallic percussion and original instruments made of metal sounds as well as actual ambient pile-driver sounds.

Echosystem: Protecting Our Water is presented as part of the Ensemble Pi's Peace Project, which was launched

by the collective in 2005 with the goal of opening a dialogue between ideas and music on some of the world's current and critical issues.

Performers will include Kristin Norderval, voice and laptop; Airi Yoshioka, violin; Idith Meshulam, piano;

Clair Bryant, cello; Karl Kramer, French horn; Barry Crawford, flute; and Nick Gallas, clarinet.
